The first heats began at 9.30am in the morning and as the right hand point break of Cimaja was too small, the contest was held at nearby Sunset beach. At Sunset Beach, we were welcomed by perfect left and right beach breaks. The waves were 1-3 feet high ? perfect for the junior chargers.
Round 1 consisted of all the local surfers. In round 2, the seeded surfers entered the competition and an unknown charger (Alik Rudiarta) from Uluwatu in Bali was looking deadly knocking out all that came against him with powerful maneuvers that scored high. As expected, all of the seeded surfers made it through to the quarterfinals. As the tide lowered and the close out sets became more frequent it was the groms who were lucky enough to catch the open face waves that would prevail.
For the finals the waves had dropped in size and quality. Rudi Hartono was surfing with good strategy scoring on the waves that allowed for a reo turn or sharp cutback. The other finalists didn?t have the same strategy taking off on the bigger close outs.
Results: 1st ? Rudi Hartono 2nd ? Cakra Yuda 3rd ? Dadi Anwari 4th ? Ida Bagus Sima Rai
Rudi now receives a ticket into the Indonesian King of the Groms Final, to be fought out on the 22nd and 23rd of July at Halfway, Kuta Beach. The winner of the Lembongan event, and the winner of the Sumbawa event will also meet Rudi there, as will all of the winners from the coming heats, which will be in Padang and Nias.
