10 years of surf shop excellence, leading the surf
industry in Bali. How it all began.
JungleSurf?
has its roots in the personal experience of its founder. Balinese surfing legend
Ketut Kasih focus on quality and has made JungleSurf? a model of surf shop
excellence and a leader in the development of the local surf industry.
One of Bali's first surfers, Ketut Kasih had many foreign
friends to share the fun with. Some of them, Japanese, much smaller than the
tall, well-built, dark-skinned Ketut, started calling him (King Kong)
. The nickname stuck in 1979 when he began making King Kong Board
shorts, the first board shorts made and sold in Bali. A real grass-roots
production, Ketut use to cut his fabrics on the floor at home, had a tailor to
stitched them, and Bali Barrel and Ulu's surf shops to sell them. Surfing
quickly grew, the Board shorts were high quality and Ketut had trouble meeting
the demand.
In 1983 he opened his first surf shop. ( my stock
went so fast! ) Ketut laughs, ( there was no competition! I
made trunks, walk shorts, T-shirts and everything went really quick! )
His success
wasn't luck. Ketut Kasih worked and studied hard. Inspired by the best board
shorts of the time, applying his own creativity and practical sense, he focused
on high-quality. ( Board shorts aren't like other shorts )
points out Ketut, ( they're made especially for surfing, and being a
surfer myself I knew the difference ). Ketut's routine back then
consisted mainly of surfing and board short production.
Throughout the late 80's Ketut studied manufacturing and retailing. In
1991 he licensed Quiksilver? for Indonesia. In 1994
, with the energy, creativity and sense of style he always had, Ketut
opened the first JungleSurf shop. There had never been anything like it before
in Bali. King Kong JungleSurf? was a big and flashy surf shop.
Modern interior, displays, the latest music loud and a wide range of the best
international surf wear and accessories. It was an exception in an industry were
money, appearance and imitation were often more important than real knowledge,
creativity or genuine feeling. Ketut could understand and envision products and
marketing like no other businessman in Bali. JungleSurf? shop
was clean, cool and well-lit, the shop staff friendly, helpful and
knowledgeable. Customers were satisfied, and Ketut Kasih's business boomed. It
took competitors two years to begin follow Ketut's example.
Ketut Kasih's
characteristic energy, creativity, daring and insight have always kept him ahead
of the time. Throughout the 90's he visited trade shows in the U.S., Australia
and Japan. In 1996 he start to sell top brands surfboards
like Channel Islands, Maurice Cole and JC. The late 90's see him involved in
establishing other big shops like (Quiksilver Boardrider), (Dreamland), (Volcom)
in Bali and (City Surf) in Jakarta and Surabaya.
From his decades of experience , Ketut perceived that surfing was a way of
life encompassing also traveling, thinking, relaxing, partying, making friends
and being fashionable. In april 2001 , Ketut opened a
second JungleSurf? shop, at Kuta Suci Arcade and in march
2003 the third one, just across the road from the main Kuta
Beach now globally recognized surfing mecca.
The Shops today JungleSurf? satisfy (all your surfing
needs) from the smallest accessories through the coolest board shorts to the
best boards, the shops have it all. Whether you're purely practical or look
oriented, hardcore or trendy, male or female, child or adult,

With clean walls and open spaces, the shops have an exclusive, up-market
